CHAPTER TWELVE

Not only was The Sariel International Complex on full lockdown, they had brought in reinforcements from the Farm in West Virginia. Michael Charon had purchased the five-story office building and adjoining parking garage for cash on the seventh anniversary of the day he was drummed out of the CIA. Where the money came from was never quite clear. The main structure was a ubiquitous glass and steel building with nothing to distinguish it from other office buildings along the south shore of the Potomac River in Alexandria. Charon had bought it for location and not looks. With easy access to the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge and an unobstructed view of the Kennedy Center, at any time other than rush hour, it was a short drive to the State Department, White House, Pentagon, Langley and Capitol Hill. If that wasn’t fast enough, Sariel had a pair of helicopters on the roof of the parking garage.

After Charon bought the building, he had the top three floors converted to apartments of various shapes and sizes. Some staffers like Charon and Kevin Fox used it as their semi-primary residence. Others used it as a place to decompress between assignments or a place to bring dates when they were in the city. The rest of the building was office space, a world class dining room, and the exercise center. At any given time anywhere from ten to eighty ex-military or ex-law enforcement Sariel employees could be residing in the building. This weekend the head count on Friday was less than twenty. Since the lockdown had started, that number was approaching sixty and still rising.

At Michael Charon’s insistence, everyone had relocated from the Four Seasons to the Complex to get a few hours of sleep before going to the bank to get the documents. With at least two highly skilled senior citizens on the loose with unclear intentions, Charon wanted everyone rested and at the top of their games. The loudest protests, of course, came from Olivia, but it was more out of habit than any real objection.

Michael Charon and Val McIntosh, both dressed and ready for their excursion, were sipping coffee on the terrace of Charon’s penthouse. They were watching the rats racing around the District when Simon Dahlmann joined them. A few hours sleep, a shower, and a change of clothes had done wonders for Dahlmann. His eyes were still a bit bloodshot and his hands weren’t steady, but he was nothing like the train wreck he had been the night before.

“Good morning,” Dahlmann said as Val poured him a cup of coffee from the carafe.

“Good morning, yourself,” Val said with a radiant smile as she patted the seat next to her. Dahlmann made a point of walking around the table as far away as possible from Michael Charon.

“Did you sleep well?” Charon asked as he made eye contact with Lars Swenson and, with a barely perceivable nod, indicated Lars was no longer needed. The big blond immediately turned on his heels, went back inside the apartment, and found a chair where he could keep Dahlmann in his line of sight.
